Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a teeth-alignment system using clear plastic trays to move your teeth into the proper position gently. The trays are customized to fit your mouth, and you receive new ones as your teeth slowly move.

Invisalign can shift teeth both horizontally and vertically. It’s even possible to rotate teeth. The system places just the right level of force on your teeth to safely and effectively move them into optimal positions.

Invisalign trays are clear and virtually invisible when worn. That’s a big part of the appeal for adults who want the results of traditional braces without the requisite mouthful of metal.

What happens during an Invisalign appointment?

The first step in the process is an initial consultation. Dr. Philip M. Cook is an Invisalign Preferred Provider, meaning he has significant experience with the system. During your consultation, Dr. Cook evaluates your dental health and alignment to determine if Invisalign is right for you.

Next, he uses a scanner to create digital 3D images of your teeth. That information allows Dr. Cook to create a customized treatment plan. Before you receive the first set of trays, he has a firm idea of how your teeth will move and how long your treatment is likely to last.

Once your Invisalign aligners are available, you return to Dr. Cook to check the fit. You wear the trays for 20-22 hours each day and only take them out during meals and dental hygiene routines. As your teeth move into alignment, you see Dr. Cook approximately every six weeks to check your progress and receive the next set of trays.

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is a fantastic system and a powerful means of achieving an optimally-aligned smile. There are some cases, however, where Invisalign isn’t the best option. Determining whether you’re a good candidate for Invisalign begins during your initial consultation.

Here are some reasons why Invisalign might not be right for you:

  • Your teeth are badly misaligned
  • You have an unusually pronounced overbite
  • You lack the commitment to wear your trays as needed

Invisalign is also not a good option for young teenagers. Your teeth continue to develop through your early teens. Because a young teenager’s teeth are constantly growing at incremental levels, creating the proper fit using Invisalign trays isn’t possible.
